Compositions of pattern restricted sets of permutations

The composition of two pattern restricted classes X,Y is the set of all permutation products θφ where θ ∈ X,φ ∈ Y . This set is also defined by pattern restrictions. Examples are given where this set of restrictions is finite and where it is infinite. The composition operation is studied in terms of machines that sort and generate permutations. The theory is then applied to a multistage sorting network where each stage can exchange any number of adjacent disjoint pairs.

We compute the joint distribution of descent and major index over permutations of {1, . . . , n} with no descents in positions {n− i, n− i+ 1, . . . , n− 1} for fixed i ≥ 0. This was motivated by the problem of enumerating symmetrically constrained compositions and generalizes Carlitz’s q-Eulerian polynomial.

We study several restricted classes of compositions by giving one-to-one maps between them and different classes of restricted binary strings or pattern avoiding permutations. Inspired by the ECO method [8], new succession rules for these classes are presented. Finally, we obtain generating algorithms in Constant Amortized Time (CAT) for theses classes.
